Requirements for the Consulates of Colombia in the USA
Procedure for Adults
For any processing at our consulate, it is essential to remember that each procedure must be carried out individually. You, as an adult, must present yourself at the office you have selected after having gathered all necessary documents, pose for the photograph, register your fingerprints, and sign. You do not need to bring photographs.
Required Documents
You are required to present the original Citizenship ID in a valid format, either:
- A first-issue Password issued by the National Civil Registry, accompanied by a copy of the civil birth registration obtained through the Notary, Registrar, or Consul;
- A Password derived from a request for a duplicate or renewal of the citizenship ID issued by the National Civil Registry. This document must be accompanied by the online consultation of the ID validity certificate conducted by the issuing office through the National Civil Registry's website.
Passwords for requests to rectify the citizenship ID will not be accepted.
If you have a previous passport, it must be presented. In cases of loss or theft of your passport, you must report the situation to the issuing office under oath.
If the Civil Birth Registration and/or the citizenship ID were obtained belatedly, it is necessary to present the Colombian Civil Birth and/or Death Registrations that allow verification of how Colombian nationality was acquired, in accordance with Article 96 of the Political Constitution. The Passport Issuing Office will review the documentation submitted in compliance with Resolution 6888 of November 26, 2021, which regulates the provisions regarding Colombian passports and travel documents and repeals Resolutions 3959 of December 29, 2020, and 656 of February 17, 2021.
Note: The issuing office may, if deemed necessary, request the nationality certificate to verify the applicant's identity.
When you cannot present your ID for passport application, it is mandatory to bring the original physical password.
Passports for Minors
- Presence of the Minor and Companion: The minor must be accompanied by one of their parents or legal representative for the process.
- Identity Documents: They must present their citizenship ID in a valid format or, failing that, authorize a third party to carry out the request, which must be done before a public notary or judge and duly apostilled or legalized if done abroad.
- Additional Documentation in Certain Cases:
- If one parent has passed away, present the death certificate.
- Present an authentic copy of the minor's civil birth registration.
- In the event of loss or theft of the passport, the situation must only be reported under oath.
Additional Requirements Depending on Age and Situation
- Minors Aged 7 to 17 Years: They must also present the identity card or password.
- If the Procedure is Conducted Abroad: The identity card is not a mandatory requirement.
- Cases of Civil Registration Obtained Belatedly: It is necessary to present the necessary Colombian civil birth and/or death registrations to prove Colombian nationality according to the Political Constitution.
Important Considerations
- Change of Document Type: Every time a Colombian changes the type of document (from civil registration to identity card, etc.), their passport must be updated.
- Exceptions and Specifications: Birth registration certificates and certified photocopies of the civil birth registration are not accepted for minors.
